SUMMARY:Die wise with Stephen Jenkinson - A day-long workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome Stephen Jenkinson to Boconnoc this summer for a one day workshop. \nKnown as a master of storytelling\, over the years\, Stephen has worked extensively with dying people and their families\, is a former programme director in a major Canadian hospital\, and a former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school. \nStephen is also a sculptor and traditional canoe builder whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture. \nDuring this talk\, Stephen will be walking you through his award-winning book\, ‘Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity & Soul’ which is focused on grief\, dying and the great love of life.  \nDie Wise does not offer seven steps for coping with death. It does not suggest ways to make dying easier. It pours no honey to make the medicine go down. Instead\, with lyrical prose\, deep wisdom\, and stories from his two decades of working with dying people and their families\, Stephen Jenkinson places death at the centre of the page and asks us to behold it in all its painful beauty.  \nWe look forward to seeing you for what will undoubtedly be an inspiring and spiritually stimulating conversation by Stephen.  \nThe talk will take place in the Stable yard at Boconnoc and there will be time between sessions to explore the beautiful grounds of the estate.  \n  \nRead more about Stephen Jenkinson’s work on his website.  \nTo purchase his book Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul \n ahead of the talk\, please see the Amazon link here. \nBUY TICKETS HERE \n  \n \n  \nWe do not have facilities on site for lunch so you will need to bring something with you for the day. We will however be providing a tea and coffee station which will be available throughout the day.  \nTransport Information: \nLostwithiel train station is a 10 minute drive away\, or 45 minute cycle\, with lots of hills \nLiskeard train station is a 20 minute drive away \nWe have parking available on site for guests. \nThere is no accommodation available on the estate on this date unfortunately\, however if you are coming from out of town please find a few recommendations below which are nearby to the estate; \nBrean Park Farm \nChy Bownder Cottage \nUnique rustic hideaway

SUMMARY:EXPLORE THE SOUNDS OF BOCONNOC AT NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Explore the meadows and woodland valleys of Boconnoc at dusk into the evening\, as we have the pleasure of being treated to a guided walk by ecologist and ornithologist Robbie Phillips. \nDusk is when many of the creatures living on the estate wake up and you can hear the screeches and calls of our nocturnal animals as they head out on their evening hunt. We will hope to hear tawny owls and possibly barn owls as well as listening to bats using a special bat detector. \nWe are delighted to be welcoming Robbie back for a second year\, to host this event. As part of the evening’s agenda\, we will also have a hands-on experience with moths\, setting a moth light ( harmless to moths ) at the start of the evening to see what has come in by dark. This will give everyone the chance to see some of the beautiful species we have at Boconnoc.  \nRead our interview with Robbie here to learn more about him\, his love of nature and his night walks. \nThis is a rare opportunity to explore the private grounds of Boconnoc which are not usually open to the public. Alongside this you will be treated to expert knowledge from ecologist Robbie Phillips. A truly wonderful experience for nature lovers. \n \nA lovely testimonial from last year’s guided tour with Robbie; \n“Just back from their Guided Bird Walk which was absolutely lovely. A small group of us were taken around Boconnoc’s beautiful parkland guided by Robbie\, an expert ornithologist who explained all the bird songs we heard along the way… it was a really interesting evening!” \nAdditional information \nPlease note the walk will be approximately 1.5hours across 2.5km across varying and uneven terrain. We advise sensible footwear and wet weather clothes if raining. Please be advised to bring a torch/headtorch if you have one available. \nThis event is best suited for adults and children over the age of 12 \nYou will need a good level of fitness for this walk and be able to cope with walking on uneven ground. \nPark and meet in the Stable yard at Boconnoc. \nStandard price: £25 \nThere will be a warming mug of hot chocolate during the evening \nBUY TICKETS HERE \n \nAccommodation: \nIf you would like to stay at Boconnoc\, we have availability in our Grooms House which sleeps six people during this period. Guests will receive complimentary tickets to the walk. If you would like to book\, please get in touch by emailing stay@boconnoc.com or calling 01208 872507. SUMMARY:The joys of ‘No Dig’ - A gardening workshop by Charles Dowding
DESCRIPTION:This September we are excited to be welcoming gardener and author Charles Dowding to Boconnoc for an informative ‘No Dig’ Workshop in our beautiful estate. During an inspiring presentation in Boconnoc House\, Charles will show you how he has fine-tuned various no dig methods over the years. He will also be providing expert advice on succession planting\, multi-sowing\, pest reduction\, the use of fleece and mesh and propagation.  \nCharles is one of the most well known experts in the UK who specializes in no dig and he has been an advocate of the method since he first started growing vegetables back in 1981. In fact\, much of his career has been dedicated to teaching others about this approach\, both in the form of his books and successful YouTube channel.  \nThis method means you don’t disrupt the fragile soil life and the important microorganisms\, fungi and worms that help feed plant roots. It’s a fantastic way to avoid using harsh chemicals and toxic concoctions in your garden whilst also helping you save time and money. The technique is also great for beginners as you’ll have less chance of failure during harvesting due to the improved growing conditions of your soil and you don’t need to worry about re-digging your flower beds each year. \n \nThroughout the workshop you will have the chance to ask questions before we break for a delicious lunch.  \nAfterwards we will move into the Kitchen Garden so you can see how Stuart\, the Head Gardener at Boconnoc has been experimenting with Charles’ technique in the onsite kitchen garden. Charles will demonstrate how to make a no dig bed on weedy grass. As a group we’ll then look at different parts of the garden as we see these techniques in action\, including compost making.  \nIf you would like to learn more about growing all kinds of vegetables productively\, healthily and more easily join us for this inspiring day with Charles. We look forward to seeing you in September. \nLunch:  \nHomemade lunch will be cooked by our wonderful housekeeper Kay Bolitho using local fresh ingredients as well as produce from the Kitchen Garden. This will be served in our beautiful Garden room which has views stretching over the parkland. If you have dietary requirements or allergies please let us know. \nTickets are £140 to include workshop (£115) and two course lunch (£25) \nBUY TICKETS HERE \nParking is available on site. \nAccommodation is also available on site – please contact stay@boconnoc.com for details.

The prize constitutes a week’s residency on the estate\, providing a valuable opportunity for the Musicians to work intensively on repertoire and technique in the private and inspirational setting of Boconnoc. \n  \nABOUT THE VOX QUARTET \nThe Vox Quartet\, a passionate ensemble comprising musicians from England\, Ireland\, and America\, came together during their studies at the prestigious Royal College of Music. Despite their diverse backgrounds\, the members of the quartet found common ground in their love for chamber music and their commitment to honing their craft. They are lucky enough to have had guidance from the Chilingirian Quartet and the Sacconi Quartet members. \nTHE PROGRAMME \n\n  \nTHE MUSICIANS PERFORMING \n  \n \nBorn in North London\, Niamh Adams began playing the violin at age 6\, first learning the Suzuki method with Hannah Biss and later learning with Lorraine McAslan. In 2019\, she began studying under the tutelage of Dr. Tatjana Goldberg and in 2020\, she earned a place at The Purcell School. In the same year\, she was the proud recipient of the Gillman Music Award and\, in 2021\, was presented with the Lingfield Medal for Music\, awarded to her by The Rt Hon. The Lord Lingfield. Niamh is currently studying for a Bachelor of Music at The Royal College of Music\, London\, with Professor Michał Ćwiżewicz\, where she is a John Lewis Partnership Scholar supported by the Douglas and Hilda Simmonds Scholarship. She is lucky to have been loaned a fine Italian violin\, a Nicolo Amati copy\, made in 1747. In the future\, she hopes to travel to Europe to continue her musical studies. \n  \n \nViolinist Emily Ames is finishing her second year as a Bachelor of Music Student at the Royal College of Music\, where she studies with Radu Blidar. She has been studying violin for 17 years. Emily was the Vermont Youth Orchestra concertmaster before being awarded a place at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts. She also began attending the youth orchestra at the New England Conservatory there. She currently plays an old Italian violin\, made in Naples in 1820. Emily has enjoyed attending music workshops such as Apple Hill Centre for Chamber Music\, Ithaca Suzuki Institutes\, and many others. She enjoys nothing more than playing in chamber groups with her peers. \n \nIrish cellist Catherine Cotter studies with Amanda Truelove at the Royal College of Music. She is a multiple prizewinner in the ESB Feis Ceoil\, Ireland’s largest music festival. She has performed in numerous prestigious locations in Ireland and abroad\, including the American Irish Historical Society in New York and the National Concert Hall in Dublin. She was named the inaugural “Cellissimo” Ambassador for Music for Galway in September 2021 and performed for three years on the “Galway Cello ”- an instrument made primarily from Irish wood\, which was commissioned for the festival and featured a beautiful\, unique Claddagh design on the scroll. Recently\, she performed a programme of Shostakovich\, Weber and Faurè with Irish pianist Finghin Collins in Cellissimo 2024. \nBefore beginning her studies at the RCM\, she was a student of Aisling Drury Byrne and Christopher Marwood at the Royal Irish Academy of Music\, where she was awarded both the Stephen Vernon Bursary for Outstanding Cellist or Double Bassist and first place in the Dublin Philharmonic Junior Solo Competition. She was also one of four RIAM students selected for the Eversheds Sutherland Accelerator Academy and awarded a place on the Young Scholar Programme at the RIAM. She is the former principal cellist of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and performed with them in their 2018 tour of Amsterdam. She is an active chamber musician and regularly performs as part of the Vox Quartet and as part of a piano trio at the RCM. \n \n  \nKatharine Wing is an exceptional viola player interested in orchestral and ensemble playing. She is a second-year undergraduate at the Royal College of Music and studies viola with Professor Jonathan Barritt\, who she first started learning in 2020 at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. Since commencing her studies at the Royal College\, she has been selected for several master classes\, is a regular member of the RCM Philharmonic\, and she recently played Principal second viola in the RCM’s New Perspectives project. At 11\, Katharine joined the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain\, where she gained a wide range of orchestral experience. Later\, she was invited to join the West Sussex Youth Orchestra\, where she honed her orchestral playing skills as section leader. She is an enthusiast for the baroque viola and thoroughly enjoys playing in the RCM’s Baroque Ensemble. Katherine plays a modern Roderick R.
